Introduction

People Movement Data is collected through precise, anonymised GPS signals sourced and aggregated from thousands of smartphone apps.

You can access People Movement Data within Planwisely by clicking on in the left-hand sidebar.

There are three ways this data is presented: Trips, Heatmaps, and Length of Stay.

People Movement Data is currently in an early release phase - if you are interested in gaining access, please contact us at enquiries@planwisely.io

Trips

The trips view helps you to gain an understanding of where trips start (their origin) or finish (their destination) by meshblock level through to LGA level. A trip is defined as a journey between two places that are at least 150 metres apart, where the user has spent at least 15 minutes at their destination.

Click on an area on the map to select it. You can select multiple areas by holding down Ctrl/Cmd while clicking; or by holding down Shift and dragging to select all areas inside a box.

Once an area has been selected, trips will be shown on the map.

Selecting a zone and viewing trips

Labels on the map can be turned on and off by clicking the label icon in the toolbar at the top of the module.

Charts will be displayed in the right-hand sidebar, showing data for the selected area. These charts provide summary statistics, such as an hourly breakdown of trips, the top origins/destinations, and trip length distribution.

Charts sidebar for the trips module

If you close the charts sidebar, it can be re-opened by clicking the chart icon in the toolbar at the top of the module.

Heatmaps

The heatmaps show the People Movement Data by level of activity, or by length of stay (relative density).

Heatmaps module

The heatmap will automatically become more detailed as you zoom into the map. The data can be filtered by day and by hour.

Depending on the insight you want to gain, there are several options for scaling.

Use the Global Maximum scale to view the full activity range for the People Movement dataset and understand your study area in that context. With this scaling, the legend will show the full range of activity levels for the national dataset.

The Current map area scale will show the heatmap data scaled to just the area you are viewing on your screen. This means that the legend will adjust so that the highest activity level on your map becomes the maximum, and the lowest activity level on your map as the minimum. This gives you greater visibility of the relative high and low activity levels for the area you are viewing.

A custom scaling option is made available which enables you to filter out low or high areas of activity.

You can switch from a logarithmic view to a linear view by ticking the Use fixed intervals checkbox.

Click on the heatmap to view a popup with more detail including the activity value and coordinates for that hexbin, or to visit Google street view and add a site for that location.

Length of Stay

The length of stay module shows how long people spend on average at a given location.

Length of stay visualisation in Brisbane

This data can be filtered by Weekday/Weekend and by three-hour blocks.

Clicking an area on the map will display detailed charts for that region, such as an hourly breakdown of the busiest times and a dwell length distribution. Multiple areas can be selected by holding down Ctrl/Command while clicking.
